The concept of fire rated downlights is simply to fill the gap that is left when standard recessed downlight are fitted. You see, each homes ceiling has a certain amount of fire prevention between floors, even older houses. This form of prevention is usually carried out by a simple piece of plaster board, which often has a fire safety rating of sixty minutes. This means that when fire occurs there is a one hour window from when the fire starts under the ceiling of one floor, until if comes through the floor above.  Fitting standard recessed lighting compromises this fire safety by creating gaps. Gaps in the fixture’s construction that allow for heat, smoke and flames to pass through quicker, thereby undoing the plasterboard’s good work.

Fired rated recessed downlights however, provide the same protection as the plasterboard itself. The luminaries in the fitting have a covering that prevent smoke, heat and flames from getting through for up to sixty minutes and some fired rated recessed lighting can withstand these elements for much longer.
